The Yearbook Session


A yearbook session is usually short and simple, with one main goal: getting the portrait that will appear in the yearbook. The session is more structured, with a standard backdrop, a set pose, and specific school requirements for what the final image needs to look like. The focus is not on variety or creativity as much as it is on getting a clean, polished portrait that fits the yearbook format.

Grad Sessions


A grad session is much more personalized and experience-driven. Instead of creating one formal portrait, a grad session is designed to celebrate this season of life with a full set of images that feel more like you. These sessions often include multiple outfits, a location that matches your style, and a mix of posed and candid images. You might include your cap and gown, college gear, sports uniform, or other personal details that tell more of your story.

The biggest difference is really the purpose of the session. A yearbook session is about checking the box for the official school portrait, while a grad session is about creating meaningful, personality-filled images you will actually want to share, print, and keep. One is primarily practical, and the other is more about celebrating who you are at this milestone moment.

Which session do I need?


It depends on what you want from the experience. If you only need a polished portrait for the school yearbook, the Yearbook-Only Session is a great fit. If you’d also like a variety of relaxed, personality-filled images that celebrate your senior, choose one of our Grad Sessions (with your yearbook session).

Can grad session images be submitted to the yearbook?


It depends on your school’s requirements. Most San Diego schools require senior yearbook portraits to follow specific guidelines so every student’s photo has a consistent appearance. However, some schools allow students to submit an image from their grad session. Before choosing a photo, check with your school’s yearbook adviser for its current submission rules, deadlines, and image specifications.

When should I schedule each session?


Most senior yearbook photo deadlines fall in October or November, so we recommend scheduling your Yearbook-Only Session during the summer before senior year begins.


Grad Sessions can take place throughout senior year, but booking early gives you the best choice of dates. Fall weekends often fill several weeks in advance, and daylight becomes more limited after the time change in November.


Another important consideration: Once school starts, seniors’ calendars quickly fill with classes, sports, theater, choir, and other activities.

How long does each session take?


A Yearbook-Only Session is quick and focused, typically lasting 5–10 minutes. Most Grad Sessions last about 60 minutes, with two extended options available. The additional time allows us to get to know your senior, help them feel comfortable in front of the camera, and create a wider variety of natural, personality-filled images.
